For my online class, we were tasked to make a construction tour in VR using the game engine Unity. The project was made to deploy to Oculus and supports 3DOF tracking. The intent of the project is to allow a client to see the current state of their site with interactive menus (one body locked and one world locked) to see jobsite schedule, milestones, app features and the minimap and to be able to teleport to certain areas of the site, watch the construction time lapse (with play/pause buttons & 3D audio) and toggle the site from day to night. Due to the 3DOF tracking, the user can move around the site with free teleportation (using a curved line to mark where you want to go), walking and using the minimap's waypoint teleportation. There are scattered interactable objects that can be picked up, thrown and dropped at the user's discretion to increase immersion and plausibility.
The project features a made-up campus I made based off of Syracuse University elements since the course is through SU. There are 6 buildings; 2 dorms, 2 academic buildings, a student center and a library. In the client letter, it was highlighted that safety should noted around the site. Since I am in the construction industry, I wanted to pull the construction site tour idea further into highlighting the "Fatal Four"; falls, struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/between which are the biggest injuries faced by construction workers.
To make sure the user comprehends this emphasis on safety, there are moving signs explaining what to look out for in certain locations and special signs that talk about one of the Fatal Four. At the Fatal Four locations, there is a sign explaining how that Fatal Four element is applicable in the project's situation and there is a trophy that can be picked up and brought to the starting point to display that the user has explored the site and has been educated on the Fatal Four.
All videos were recorded from the Unity game view using the VRTK VR Simulator.
